Interview met Creatief Bureau Vandejong

"Museums have priceless collections that need to be seen by future generations, but we also need the smaller creative initiatives that function as a bridge between the audience and the art world."

- Beelddragers, a platform for talent. With love for the image and its maker.

TELL US ABOUT BEELDDRAGERS
Beelddragers is a platform for talent. With love for the image and its maker. We organize online and offline initiatives that celebrate the power of image, to provide context and connect makers to an audience. We do this for example with our concept X10 (times ten). Over a period of ten months, we ask a talented maker to tell us a story about his or her inspiration and to create a new image based on that story. Beelddragers then interviews the maker and we publish both the story and the image on our website. Medium is free and can vary from photography to illustration or graphic design. After ten months we bring the ten makers, their stories and images together in one exhibition. We also sell the work for €50 in an edition of 30 because we think art should be affordable for everyone. X10 is our own concept, but we also work on commission, for example for the Gemeente Amsterdam, we select video work of talented artists to be shown in the entrance hall of a public building.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WORK?
Beelddragers is based on collaboration. First thanks to the strong bond we have between us, we really compliment each other’s strengths. Together we have a combination of skills that vary from graphic design, communications and theoretical backgrounds. This enables us to create concepts and execute them from start to finish. But we also love working with others! Artists that amaze and inspire us with their work and ideas are a big part of our inspiration.

COULD YOU NAME ORGANIZATIONS OR PEOPLE WITH WHOM YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK?
To scout new talent, we go to a lot of final year shows at academies. This is an important moment in the career of a new artist. Galleries and important people in the industry come by to judge and maybe select their work. We would love to collaborate with academies within this process. We also dream of creating our own magazine one day. We love (and envy a bit) your Foam Magazine, creating a portfolio for the magazine would be great, or curating an exhibition room in the Stedelijk museum. And we want to make Amsterdam’s first street photography festival. Anyone who can help us with any of the above is more than welcome to contact us!

WHAT DOES INNOVATION MEAN TO YOU? AND WHAT IS ITS VALUE?
Innovation for Beelddragers means that we try to surprise and involve an audience with art. To make it relevant and open it up to a large public, without making it easy or flat. We never say to each other: let’s be innovative today or let’s make an innovative exhibition. But we do try to look for new ways of showing work made by talented artists to people who otherwise maybe would not have seen it. We do this by creating, what we feel are, relevant initiatives.

WHICH INNOVATIONS WITHIN THE FIELD OF ARTS AND CULTURE WILL DEFINE THE FUTURE?
We hope it is a combination between small local initiatives and larger institutions. Museums have priceless collections that need to be seen by future generations but we also need the smaller creative initiatives that function as a bridge between the audience and the art world. They come up with innovative ideas that push these institutions forward and open them up to the public, both digitally and physically.
